I used to play MAG, so I can kinda see what the overall idea of the more advanced game modes may be, and i'm excited still for that. Unfortunately, I've only been able to get into a hand full of skirmish maps, other than that, its been all Ambush (Of the 8v8 variety. I played I think 3 or 4 of the 16v16 Ambush last night before it was, I guess, done away with). You know, I log in, and it says there is 60,000+ people on the server. I go to the battle finder, and I can choose between the single Battle Academy match that's always the same map, and that's it, unless there is a battle under the mercenary tab, which only seems to happen once every few minutes or so, and even if it says there are spaces available, it almost always tells me there is no more room. But that's all fine and good I thought, I gotta learn the ropes at some point, i'll do this Battle Academy thing and get some SP and get a few upgrades and be ready for the actual game. Wrong. More often than not, Battle Academy to a new player seems to be the equivalent of Sandy Hook Elementary to a small child, an unstoppable, brutal assault. It's bad enough when the opposing team has a hand full of players who are fairly top end, but it gets worse when you see (what appears to me to be) a group of veteran players who regularly play together using high end equipment and high end strategy to just mud hole stomp the opposing team of noobs. Now, i'm not saying change anything, cause I have no idea what changes to recommend. I've basically realized that i'm looking at a good long time of getting the ever loving dog **** kicked out of me time and time and time and time again, until I've managed to cobble together enough SP to start getting my head above water. Which is all fine and good, if that's the way its gotta be that's the way its gotta be. I've also been extremely disappointed by the in game community. After a particularly savage beating in an Ambush match (I think I was like 0/17) I figured i'd try and join a Corp. I bounced around to a few Corps to find the same thing each time- Promises of an active Corp friendly to beginners dashed by a dead Corp chat and absolutely no help or interaction what so ever. If i'm joining a Corp I wanna fight with them, not join so I can login to a dead chat room while getting destroyed playing Call of Duty (I mean 8v8 Ambush) by myself. At this point I've figured screw it, from what ive seen i'm nowhere near being effective enough (equipment wise) for a seriously active Corp to want me, so i'll just try and get by on my own for now. And I don't dare ask any questions in the Match Lobby or General Chat. I've got thick skin and all, but the thought of being verbally accosted by someone who is probably 15 years old over my lack of knowledge of a game I've played for a day is not an appealing one. All in all, the negatives I've seen aren't enough yet to turn ME off from the game, but i'm sure for many others its been way to much to deal with.
Haven't tried them myselves, but Dust University is a corp with the specific aim of helping new players. You could try them out. Or, you could join the corp I'm a member of (STRONG-ARMED BANDITS). We have a generally friendly atmosphere, many of us are willing to answer any questions about the game you might have, and we try to get as many people as possible into squads. The activity varies throughout the day, but there are usually at least 10 players active at any given time. I play a lot, but have massive RL commitments the coming week, so I might not be on a lot. If you see me on, feel free to ask questions, request squadding etc.
In any case, one thing to keep in mind when asking questions in corp chat: it could take some time before people reply. They might be in, say, a very even Domination match, which could take half an hour in some cases. It's unlikely they'll even check corp chat during the match. |
